Description
Meet the Mucci library
Every strain has a story. Tap any name below to read a little about where it comes from and what to look for under the microscope.
Golden Teacher
Where so many myco journeys begin, and a firm favourite here at Mucci. Golden Teacher has been around for decades, yet nobody has ever pinned down exactly where it came from or who named it. We rather like that it’s kept its mystery. If it’s your first strain under the scope, you’re in good company, and we’re only ever a message away if you’ve got questions.
B+
B+, or “B-Positive” as plenty of our community call it, is one of those strains with a bit of folklore behind it. It’s usually credited to a cultivator known only as “Mr G”, and was once thought to be a hybrid, but it’s now generally seen as a distinct cubensis in its own right. Dependable, consistent, and a staple in the Mucci library.
PE6
A strain with one of the best stories in mycology. The Penis Envy family traces back to spores Terence McKenna collected in the Colombian Amazon in the early 1970s, and PE6 is one selection from that famous line. At Mucci we love strains with a history, and this one has plenty.
Albino A+
Albino A+ is a bit of a trickster, and one of our community’s favourite talking points. Despite the pale look, it isn’t a true albino. It’s a leucistic form of the A+ variety, which means low pigment rather than none at all.
Mucci Dutch King Mucci house strain
Our own selected line of Mexican Dutch King, and very much one of ours. Through careful selection and study under the microscope, we’ve developed genetics that are distinctly Mucci, with some excellent research results along the way.
Mucci Golden Halo Teacher Mucci house strain
A Mucci house strain with a glow to it, and a discovery of our own. Once we acquired this strain, we noticed straight away that it was different from normal Golden Teacher, so we researched it thoroughly ourselves before ever offering it to our customers. That pale “halo” is where the name comes from.
McKennaii
Named in honour of Terence McKenna, one of the great voices of mycology. Its exact origin is debated, and genomic work suggests it’s a close cousin of Golden Teacher. A strain that carries a legend with it, and a lovely one to compare side by side with GT.
Treasure Coast
Named after Florida’s Treasure Coast, where it’s said to have been collected in the wild. A true regional collection, and a nice reminder that every strain started out somewhere real.
Amazonian
One of the original regional collections, from the Amazon basin, and one of the named types described in Stamets and Chilton’s The Mushroom Cultivator (1983). Proper heritage, right here in the Mucci library.
KSSS (Koh Samui Super Strain)
Named after Koh Samui, the Thai island whose local mushroom traditions were documented by John Allen and Mark Merlin in 1992. A strain with a sunny backstory and a loyal following in our community.
Cambodian
Domesticated from a wild specimen collected in Cambodia. A Southeast Asian classic, and one our community keeps coming back to.
Cambodian Gold
A Cambodian-line variety named for its golden tones. Its exact relationship to the original Cambodian isn’t documented, which makes it all the more interesting to study alongside its namesake.
Dancing Tigers
A named variety with a name as lively as it sounds. Its origin isn’t publicly recorded, but it’s earned its place in the Mucci library.
JMF
Reportedly bred in the early 2000s from a wild sample in Georgia, USA, with a name that plays on Star Wars “Jedi mind tricks”. Its story is more legend than record, and we love it for that.
Pink Buffalo
From Koh Samui, Thailand. The story goes that mycologist John Allen found it near a pink water buffalo, a local sign of good luck, in the late 1990s to early 2000s. Some credit Milo Zverino instead. Either way, it’s one of the best origin stories going.
Lizard King
Reportedly collected in Georgia, USA, by an amateur mycologist known online as “LK”, with a name that tips its hat to Jim Morrison. Part mycology, part rock ‘n’ roll.
Hillbilly
Believed to have been found in Arkansas by a forum member known as “Hillbilly”, around the late 1990s to early 2000s. Down-to-earth roots, much like us.
Golden Mammoth
A named variety with a big name to live up to. Its origin isn’t publicly recorded, but it’s a proud part of the Mucci library.
PES Hawaii
A Hawaiian collection that has circulated under the PES name for years. Island heritage, studied right here.
Burma
Named after Burma (Myanmar), where the original collection is said to come from. A Southeast Asian strain with a quiet reputation among those who know.
Stargazer
Sometimes called Inca Stargazer and often linked to the foothills near Machu Picchu, though that story has never been confirmed. A strain for the dreamers among our community.
Oak Ridge
A named variety whose origin isn’t publicly recorded. Unassuming name, and a solid member of the Mucci library.
Purple Mystic
Domesticated from a wild specimen first collected in East Plant City, Florida. A name full of character for a strain with genuine wild roots.
Rusty Whytes
A named variety used as a parent in other well-known crosses. Its own origin isn’t recorded, but its influence speaks for itself.
Tidal Wave
A 2017 cross of Penis Envy and B+, first made by Doma Nunzio of Magic Myco. The name may come from the wavy edges of mature caps. Two famous lines meeting in one.
Ecuador
Isolated from a wild specimen from the highlands of Ecuador, and among the regional types described in The Mushroom Cultivator (1983). Mountain heritage, Mucci care.
Mazatapec
Named after the Mazatec region of Oaxaca, Mexico, where these mushrooms have a long and respected cultural history. A strain we hold with real respect for where it comes from.
Texas Orange Cap
Named after Texas and the orange tones it’s known for. Its origin isn’t recorded, but the name says plenty.
South African Transkei
Named after the Transkei region of South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Fittingly, southern Africa is also home to P. ochraceocentrata, described in 2026 as cubensis’s closest known wild relative. A strain with a story that’s still being written.
Z Strain
Traded for at least 20 years, with a creator and origin nobody has ever pinned down. A modern classic that’s kept its secrets.
Moby Dick
A named cubensis variety whose origin isn’t publicly recorded. A big name, and a favourite talking point in our community.
APE Revert
One of the curiosities of the Mucci library: a mutation of Albino Penis Envy that is in a reverted state. Genetics originally from Inoculate the World, and a brilliant one for anyone who loves seeing how strains change and evolve.
